DESCRIPTION:

A book of vintage crime scene photographs discovered in a used bookstore drew Melanie Pullen into this project of morbid high fashion. Inspired by the rich details and compelling stories preserved in criminal records she began a series of works based on first-hand accounts and original documents mined from the files of the LAPD.

Restaging the events and outfitting the "victims" in current haute couture, and photographing them in her staged settings, Pullen at times enlisted the help of up to 60 people per shoot including set builders, makeup artists, models, stylists and stunt crews, among others. Her models have included the actresses Rachel Miner and Juliette Lewis. Over the past three years, the 29-year old artist has worked as a commercial photographer, also shooting for the likes of Flaunt and Rolling Stone.

This stunningly atmospheric work has received considerable critical acclaim in the national and international press.
