DESCRIPTION:
Retrospective II presents an overview of Michael Kenna's landscape photographs made between 1994 and 2004. Kenna is arguably the most influential landscape photographer of his generation, with over 20 books and hundreds of solo exhibitions throughout Asia, Australia, Europe and the United States. He often works at dawn or during the night and his images, eerily beautiful scenes devoid of people, concentrate primarily on the interaction between the ephemeral atmospheric conditions of the natural landscape, and man-made structures and sculptural masses. They are the sort of deeply appreciative images a future archaeologist might make in uncovering the remains of a past civilization.
Michael Kenna was born in Widnes, England in 1953. He initially aspired to enter the priesthood but his passion for the arts led him to the Banbury School of Art where he studied painting and then photography. Later he attended The London College of Printing and began working as a photographer and artist. He moved to San Francisco in 1977, and currently lives in Portland, Oregon. His exquisitely crafted prints are included in such permanent museum collections as The National Gallery, Washington, DC; The Museum of Decorative Arts, Prague; and The Victoria and Albert Museum, London. In 2001, Michael Kenna was made a Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters by the Ministry of Culture in France.
