DESCRIPTION:

This work, published in the monograph "Roaming", appears arrestingly different than that in Todd Hido's previous two monographs. Having spent so many nights parked outside the eerie, brightly lit suburban tract homes featured in "House Hunting" and "Outskirts", it is as if Hido has put his foot on the gas pedal and, searching for something else, driven straight through to dawn. His masterful ability imbues these seemingly mundane scenes with an air of uneasy anticipation. These unpeopled pictures, often taken through a car windshield, are so effective in creating tension, they are like carefully staged pauses in some cinematic drama. In fact they are taken ìas seenî; the telegraph poles, the straggling tree, the road leading nowhere are all exactly as encountered by Hido while driving through Eastern Washington State, the California Central Valley, Indiana, South Louisiana and beyond.

"Hido's previous excursions into the suburban uncanny have been memorably moody, but his newest work on this terrain feels even more fraught." — Vince Aletti, The Village Voice

"This is not the gussied-up America seen in picture postcards, but the daunting and hauntingly memorable heartland we know from cross-country road trips and Bob Dylan songs." — Alison Bing, SF Gate
