KATHERINE ADAMS : COUTURIER DREAMS DETAILS: Katherine Adams DESCRIPTION: A self-confessed "plain dresser," Katherine Adams instead dazzles the world with the fabulous collection that is Couturier Dreams. Her gorgeous floating emulsion "garments" dance in every image, with a life and style all their own. Adams makes these collaged emulsion images by separating Polaroid photographs from their paper backing, immersing them into baths of warm water and then transferring them on to watercolor paper. She elevates this technique with wonderful skill and patience, coaxing the delicate emulsions into suggestive silhouettes, sometimes taking up to six hours to achieve what she wants. The results are joyful, playful, sensual and original, with a sense of freedom that is gloriously liberating. Spending long hours at work in the darkroom, Adams describes getting into a dream-like state as vital to her work. "A type of alchemy occurs," she explains, "when the image is set free, floating, and my journey starts." |
